Pregnancy Nerve Compression Treatment in Richmond

Pregnancy brings extra fluid and changes in posture and weight that can press on nerves around the body, causing tingling, numbness or pain. These nerve compression conditions are common and respond well to physiotherapy.

Our women’s health specialist assesses the root cause and treats it so you stay comfortable and active.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome commonly occurs and can be made worse by pregnancy. It happens when the median nerve, which runs through the wrist, becomes compressed, causing numbness, tingling and weakness in the hand and wrist.

We treat it using a variety of techniques, including splinting, deep tissue massage of the forearm and exercises.

Meralgia Paraesthetica

Meralgia paraesthetica can develop in pregnancy due to tight-fitting clothing, increased water weight and muscle tension compressing the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve at the inguinal ligament, causing pain and tingling in the outer thigh.

Our treatment includes massage, stretching, exercises and lifestyle advice, such as wearing loose-fitting clothing and avoiding tight waistbands, which can also reduce the risk of it developing.

Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome

Tarsal tunnel syndrome occurs when the tibial nerve, which passes through the tarsal tunnel on the inside of the ankle, becomes compressed. It often appears in pregnancy because of fluid retention and swelling of the ankles, leading to pain, numbness and tingling in the foot and calf.

We assess the underlying cause and build a comprehensive plan that may include stretching and strengthening exercises, massage and supportive devices such as arch supports. In most cases this is highly effective at keeping women comfortable and active through pregnancy and the postpartum period.

Many improve once pregnancy-related fluid and weight reduce, but physiotherapy relieves your symptoms now and helps you stay comfortable and mobile in the meantime.
For meralgia paraesthetica, yes. Loose-fitting clothing and avoiding tight waistbands reduce pressure on the affected nerve and can ease symptoms.
