What is Sports Rehabilitation

Some patients require more assistance with their rehabilitation programmes to ensure they are performing exercises with precision and optimal load. This is where our specialist sports therapists provide essential support. At Richmond Physiotherapy, Sports Therapy is an aspect of healthcare specifically concerned with the prevention of injury and the rehabilitation of the patient back to optimum levels of functional, occupational, and sports-specific fitness, regardless of age and ability. Working under the guidance of your lead physiotherapist, our therapists help you to perform your programme to the best of your ability, utilising the principles of sport and exercise science.

Confidence Deficits

Feeling unsure or hesitant when performing weight-bearing exercises.

Complex Movement Patterns

Struggling to coordinate multi-joint movements required for your sport or job.

Plateaued Progress

A lack of improvement in strength or mobility despite following a basic plan.

Recurring Instability

Joints that feel “weak” during specific phases of your exercise regime.

Functional Limitations

Inability to return to specific occupational tasks due to a lack of physical resilience.

Fear of Re-injury

Anxiety regarding increasing exercise intensity following a significant trauma or surgery.

Evidence-Led Rehabilitation

Our sports therapy assisted rehabilitation is strictly aligned with the latest principles of exercise science and physiological loading. We recognise that for tissue to heal and adapt, it must be subjected to the correct amount of stress, a process known as progressive overload. Our therapists monitor your response to exercise in real-time, ensuring that the volume and intensity of your programme are evidence-led and adjusted according to your physiological feedback. By following these high-authority clinical frameworks, we bridge the gap between initial pain relief and a full return to high-level activity.

Who We Help

We support a diverse range of individuals across Richmond and South West London seeking to optimise their physical potential:

  • Post-Surgical Patients: Individuals needing close supervision during the critical early and mid-stages of joint replacement or ligament repair rehab.
  • Athletes of All Levels: From amateur runners in Richmond Park to elite competitors requiring sport-specific conditioning.
  • Occupational Workers: People whose jobs require high levels of physical fitness and strength, such as manual labourers or emergency responders.
  • Seniors: Older adults looking to maintain independence and improve balance through supervised, safe strength training.
  • Chronic Injury Sufferers: Those managing long-term musculoskeletal conditions that require ongoing, guided movement support.

FAQs

Physiotherapists typically lead the initial diagnostic and treatment phase. Sports therapists specialise in the later stages of recovery, focusing on exercise science, strength conditioning, and returning you to your specific sport or occupation.

The most common route is a referral from your lead physiotherapist at our Richmond clinic. However, you can also contact us directly to book a sports rehabilitation assessment to establish your baseline and goals.

Not at all. We help people of all ages and abilities. Whether you want to return to competitive rugby or simply want to walk to the local shops without pain, our therapists adapt the programme to your needs.

Most sessions take place in our specialised rehabilitation gym at Lawton Gate House in Richmond. In certain circumstances, home visits may be arranged if your condition prevents you from attending the clinic.

Please wear comfortable clothing that allows for a full range of movement, such as gym wear, and supportive footwear, such as trainers.

While a multidisciplinary approach is often best, you can book an initial assessment directly with our sports rehabilitation team to discuss your needs and start a programme.
