What is an ultrasound scan?

Ultrasound is a technology that involves delivering sound waves (at frequencies undetectable to the human ear) through a medium and towards a target. Within musculoskeletal imaging, we use a specific ultrasound probe placed on the skin to target bone and soft tissue structures such as tendons and ligaments. Modern ultrasound machines are able to analyse the reflection to create a real time anatomical picture of the anatomy being assessed.
