Pre-op rehab:
There is strong evidence to support the benefits of physiotherapy prior to having Orthopaedic surgery. “Pre-hab” as it is commonly referred to, usually consists of an exercise programme to help strengthen key muscles groups as well as improve your range of movement. You may also need some “hands on” treatment to help reduce any swelling and muscle tension, particularly following an acute traumatic injury. In the early stages after surgery, this has been shown to improve recovery times, reduce the risk of post-operative complications and help your get back on your feet quicker!

Our expert team of clinicians can also help guide you on the recovery pathway ahead, including what equipment you might need to assist you (to help reduce any swelling for example), as well as help settle any anxieties or concerns you may have.

Post-op rehab:
Post-operative rehabilitation can be incredibly challenging but is arguably the most important part of achieving a successful outcome. After your surgery, our experienced physiotherapists will liaise with your surgeon to help to formulate a structured treatment plan for each stage of your recovery. We will be there to support you throughout your journey!

Early intervention after surgery is often recommended to help start the recovery process. At this stage, reducing swelling, addressing pain control, improving joint range of movement and muscle weakness is very important.

Once you start to make positive strides forward, we will then be able to help guide you through the “middle” and “end” stages of your rehab. By now most patients will already be able to notice significant improvements in their level of function and strength and may already be following a structured exercise programme in the gym.

In some cases, your physiotherapist may also recommend working alongside a sports rehab therapist/personal trainer, Strength & Conditioning (S&C) coach, yoga/Pilates teacher, to help focus on areas of specific weakness.

Following some surgeries (such as ACL reconstruction for example), there may be a need to adhere to a stricter rehab protocol before returning to normal sporting activities. With pivoting/twisting sports it is vital to establish how your injured limb is functioning and different stages of your recovery, particularly in relation to your un-injured side.

Deciding when you are ready to return to normal sporting activities is often the biggest challenge. When the time is right, our expert clinicians will be able to take your through a “return to sport” testing criteria using evidence-based methods to ensure you get back to doing what you enjoy most without compromising on performance or risking re-injury.

Examples of post-surgical rehabilitation that our physiotherapy team regularly manage are:

  • ACL reconstruction
  • Knee, hip and shoulder replacement
  • Rotator cuff repair and shoulder recompression
  • Ankle ligament reconstruction
  • Bunion repairs
  • Hip, knee and ankle arthroscopy
  • Spinal surgery
