What is Womens’ Health Physio?

Womens’ Health physiotherapy is the therapeutic treatment of all disorders relating to the pelvic girdle and the pelvic floor. Therapists are also know as Pelvic, Obstetric and Gynaecological Physiotherapists or Pelvic Dysfunction Physiotherapists if they deal in Men’s Health as well.

This would normally refer to a specialist physiotherapist who is trained in the both obstetric and gynaecological conditions as well as the musculoskeletal physiotherapy.

  • Urinary frequency/urgency
  • Incontinence
  • Voiding dysfunctions

  • Painful Bladder/ Interstitial Cystitis

When should someone come and see you?

At any stage you have a concern about your bladder, bowls or pelvic floor, or when you have pelvic/hip pain or where  any of the above symptoms are present. Normally post-natally I would suggest at 6 weeks where we can do the full check-up of abdominals and pelvic floor along with the plevic girdle assessment.  If you are prenatal, you can come at any stage of your pregnancy.

Do doctors know where and when to send patients?

Not all family doctors are aware of the benefits of Women’s Health Physiotherapy  although we are trying to change that. If you do have symptoms and they don’t suggest a referral, you can always ask them for it.

Is there different training for WH physiotherapy?

Womens health is a speciality of physio so we all have a degree in physiotherapy but then retrain via post graduate diplomas or courses into this specialist field.

What do you do in the treatment?

That depends on the condition but normally when we do an internal exam, we test the muscles for strength, endurance, range of movement to flag any movement dysfunction. We then test for tightness and strain in the muscle bellies themselves. Added to that we would always do an external pelvic girdle check, incorporating the ribs and abdominal functions.
