WHAT IS HYPNOSIS?

Hypnosis is a focussed state of attention where the wider environmental stimuli are ignored.  It can also be defined as by-passing the critical factor of the mind and establishing more acceptable, selected patterns of thinking.

Some people think hypnosis is like being put to sleep but hypnosis is not the same as sleep. Hypnosis is a naturally occurring state that we dip into and out of all the time.  Examples of the “everyday trance” include the hypnogogic state - just before you fall asleep at night and your mind and body are relaxed but you are well aware of what is going on around you. There is also the hypnopompic state  - just as you wake up in the morning.  A state called response attentiveness which you may go into when listening to an enthralling public speaker and ignoring the wider environmental stimuli.  Highway hypnosis describes the state of mind you can experience when you have been driving for a while and seem to forget large amounts of time. Daydreaming is also very similar to the hypnotic state.

I am a bit scared of hypnosis.  Should I be?

A lot of people are wary of hypnosis after watching TV or stage shows. It can sometimes APPEAR that the hypnotist is in control of the subject’s mind making them do all sorts of silly things like dance around like a chicken.  What you need to realise is that the subjects in these shows have gone through a careful selection process to find people who are both highly suggestible and who are really willing to act up on stage.  They are not doing anything against their will.  In fact most people in a hypnotic trance feel even more in control than usual.

Hypnotic Trance
Going into a level of hypnotic trance gives  better access to your subconscious or unconscious mind where habits, permanent memories, emotions, your imagination and protective responses are stored.  A hypnotherapist helps to guide you into this trance state and is an expert at giving positive suggestions to help you make permanent changes in your life.  Hypnotherapy can help you make positive changes to your life, easily and quickly.  It is very safe, there are no harmful side effects, only good ones.  You are completely aware of what is happening throughout the process and maintain complete control at all times.

WHAT IS NEUROLINGUISTIC PROGRAMMMING?

It is the study of the structure of subjective experience.  It has been described as the modelling of excellence.  NLP uses certain techniques to alter the way that people experience things in order  to gain positive benefits. NLP allows you to change the way that you experience and respond to certain events or stimuli so that they do not effect you in a negative way.  This challenges your limiting beliefs.

CAN I BE HYPNOTISED?

Anybody is capable of being hypnotised.  The only thing that will stop you going into hypnosis if you really want to is fear.  Generally this fear is generated by the misconception that the hypnotist is in control of your mind.  Once these myths are dispelled you will find it easy to go into hypnosis.

HYPNOSIS FOR SMOKING CESSATION

CONGRATULATIONS! You have just taken the first step to reclaiming your health, improving your life for the better and freeing yourself from the addiction that is smoking.  This is your first step to becoming a non-smoker.  This will not only benefit you but also your friends, family and others around you. And with smoking in workplaces about to be banned in England on July 1 2007, what a perfect time to choose to stop smoking. Why use hypnotherapy?  In 1992, the magazine New Scientist decided to check  the claims made by hypnotherapists  and conducted a now famous large scale study. All the well known stop smoking methods were compared.

Hypnotherapy was the most effective method. *

TWO SESSION APPROACH

Why is it a two session approach?  Hypnotherapy is much more effective if the client and the practitioner have built up a rapport.  It is essential for the client to have trust and confidence in the therapist.  If the client has previously had some experience of hypnosis, it will be easier to go into the hypnotic trance state, making the client more open to the positive suggestions that the therapist will be giving.  The first session will involve taking the case history, an explanation of hypnosis and then doing some hypnosis with you involving positive suggestions which will have benefit for your everyday life, to gain experience with hypnosis and enhance its efficacy.

We will also do some guided visualisation and future pacing to set you up with the good feelings of achieving your goal of becoming a non-smoker.  After this you set the date when you will become a non-smoker (in a few days or a week perhaps, the timing is up to you) and this will be the second session where we work together to achieve the actual stop smoking hypnosis.
From this day you will be a non-smoker.

Will hypnosis help me stop smoking?
If you are really determined and really want to stop then hypnosis will help you stop.  But hypnosis isn’t magic!  If you don’t want to stop I cannot force you to stop because your unconscious mind will reject the suggestions that I give you.  So this must be YOUR decision, if somebody else is making you see a hypnotherapist, but you do not want to stop then you are wasting your time.

Imagine how fantastic it will feel to have freed yourself from the smoking trap.  Hypnosis is completely safe and drug free.  Given the failure rate and potential side effects of some of the drugs used to stop smoking using other methods, perhaps you should consider hypnosis.

What are the costs?
The introductory rate for my Stop Smoking Hypnosis at Richmond Physiotherapy is a very reasonable £75 per session over two sessions.  This is less than a lot of therapists and other courses charge for a single stop smoking session.  Most smokers will make this money back after just a few weeks of not smoking.

Home visits
If you would feel more comfortable having the hypnosis in the familiar surroundings of your own home then that can usually be organised.I look forward to helping you free yourself from this unwanted addiction / habit.Euan Nelson  MCSP BPHTY DCH DHP

New Scientist Magazine October 1992 Vol 136
In 1992 New Scientist magazine published the results of an extensive clinical study on the most effective smoking cessation methods.  A group from the University of Iowa carried out a meta-analysis, statistically combining the results of more than 600 studies covering almost 72,000 people from America, Scandinavia and elsewhere.  The results showed the effectiveness to be as follows :
Hypnosis- 60 %
Acupuncture- 24%
Nicotine Replacement therapy- 10%
Willpower alone- 6%

WEIGHT LOSS AND WEIGHT MAINTENANCE
To lose weight the amount of energy you use must be more than the amount of energy you take in.  Simple?

A lot of people seem to go through bouts of dieting and exercising and it just doesn’t seem to give them permanent change.  When you diet you seem to put the food on a pedestal because you are having to stop yourself eating what you normally would.  Once you reach your desired weight you tend to fall off the wagon and it all comes on again.  The same with exercise.  You seem to go through bouts of exercising and make some gains but once you reach your goal you fall off again.  Sound familiar?

With hypnosis we are looking at changing your thoughts, perceptions and habits around eating and exercise on a PERMANENT basis so that you can achieve the body that you desire.  We can also harness the power of your subconscious mind to stimulate your body to make physical changes.

STRESS RELIEF
Hypnotic techniques are very effective at decreasing stress in your life and decreasing the way that day to day stressors affect you.  You will also learn simple self hypnosis techniques that you can practice on a regular basis to manage stress yourself.

PHOBIAS
There are only two things that we are born with a fear of….fear of falling and fear of loud noises.  All other fears are learnt one way or another.  If they are learnt then they can certainly be unlearnt.  By using a combination of NLP and Hypnosis we can effectively work on your phobias to improve your life by use of any or all of regression therapy, direct suggestion, modifying the way you experience things and egostrengthening.  In fact most phobias can be effectively dealt with in one session!

INSOMNIA
Hypnosis is a good way to decrease stress and help you to get to sleep more easily or gain a better quality of sleep.  You will also be taught simple self hypnosis techniques to help you relax and make it easier to get a restful sleep.

CHRONIC PAIN MANAGEMENT
Hypnosis has been shown to be effective in treatment of chronic pain in various ways.  Generally the treatment is aimed at changing the way that you experience the pain, distracting your thoughts away from the pain, decreasing the intensity of the pain, improving your day to day function irrespective of your pain or a combination of all of these.  Stress also can increase the amount of pain that you are experiencing or make it affect you life in a more negative way, so you will learn stress management techniques and receive direct suggestions to decrease stress.  You will also learn self hypnosis techniques to help yourself “switch off” from day to day stressors.

SPORTS PERFORMANCE
Is your mind the limiting factor in your sports performance rather than your body?  Have you done all the strength training, conditioning, coaching, endurance training but still reaching a sticking point.  Problems controlling mental arousal (too much or too little) on the sports field and making mistakes?  Your self visualisations not helping as much as you would like?  Becoming too tense to perform to your full potential?  Having trouble building motivation?  Recovering slowly?

If you have answered yes to any of these questions then hypnosis may be able to help you.  Remember though you can’t build on a faulty base, if you have never kicked a rugby ball before hypnosis can’t turn you into Johnny’s successor.  Neither will it make someone who has never played football before bend it like Beckham!

UNWANTED HABITS
Hypnosis helps to gain access to your subconscious mind where all of your habits and permanent memories are stored.  Using hypnotic techniques it is possible to change these habits if you really want to.

ISSUES OF CONFIDENCE  and SELF ESTEEM
Lack of confidence or self esteem affecting any part of your life?  Hypnotic techniques can be utilised to enhance self esteem and build your ego to make permanent positive changes.
