WHAT IS HYPNOSIS? Hypnosis is a focussed state of attention where the wider environmental stimuli are ignored. It can also be defined as by-passing the critical factor of the mind and establishing more acceptable, selected patterns of thinking. Some people think hypnosis is like being put to sleep but hypnosis is not the same as sleep. Hypnosis is a naturally occurring state that we dip into and out of all the time. Examples of the “everyday trance” include the hypnogogic state - just before you fall asleep at night and your mind and body are relaxed but you are well aware of what is going on around you. There is also the hypnopompic state - just as you wake up in the morning. A state called response attentiveness which you may go into when listening to an enthralling public speaker and ignoring the wider environmental stimuli. Highway hypnosis describes the state of mind you can experience when you have been driving for a while and seem to forget large amounts of time. Daydreaming is also very similar to the hypnotic state. I am a bit scared of hypnosis. Should I be? A lot of people are wary of hypnosis after watching TV or stage shows. It can sometimes APPEAR that the hypnotist is in control of the subject’s mind making them do all sorts of silly things like dance around like a chicken. What you need to realise is that the subjects in these shows have gone through a careful selection process to find people who are both highly suggestible and who are really willing to act up on stage. They are not doing anything against their will. In fact most people in a hypnotic trance feel even more in control than usual. Hypnotic Trance WHAT IS NEUROLINGUISTIC PROGRAMMMING? It is the study of the structure of subjective experience. It has been described as the modelling of excellence. NLP uses certain techniques to alter the way that people experience things in order to gain positive benefits. NLP allows you to change the way that you experience and respond to certain events or stimuli so that they do not effect you in a negative way. This challenges your limiting beliefs. CAN I BE HYPNOTISED? Anybody is capable of being hypnotised. The only thing that will stop you going into hypnosis if you really want to is fear. Generally this fear is generated by the misconception that the hypnotist is in control of your mind. Once these myths are dispelled you will find it easy to go into hypnosis. WHAT KIND OF PROBLEMS ARE HELPED BY HYPNOSIS? • Smoking Cessation• Weight Loss and Management • Stress Relief • Phobias (eg fear of public speaking, fear of flying etc) • Insomnia • Chronic Pain • Sports Performance • Irritable Bowel Syndrome • Unwanted Habits • Self Esteem, Confidence
HYPNOSIS FOR SMOKING CESSATION CONGRATULATIONS! You have just taken the first step to reclaiming your health, improving your life for the better and freeing yourself from the addiction that is smoking. This is your first step to becoming a non-smoker. This will not only benefit you but also your friends, family and others around you. And with smoking in workplaces about to be banned in England on July 1 2007, what a perfect time to choose to stop smoking. Why use hypnotherapy? In 1992, the magazine New Scientist decided to check the claims made by hypnotherapists and conducted a now famous large scale study. All the well known stop smoking methods were compared. Hypnotherapy was the most effective method. * TWO SESSION APPROACH Why is it a two session approach? Hypnotherapy is much more effective if the client and the practitioner have built up a rapport. It is essential for the client to have trust and confidence in the therapist. If the client has previously had some experience of hypnosis, it will be easier to go into the hypnotic trance state, making the client more open to the positive suggestions that the therapist will be giving. The first session will involve taking the case history, an explanation of hypnosis and then doing some hypnosis with you involving positive suggestions which will have benefit for your everyday life, to gain experience with hypnosis and enhance its efficacy. We will also
do some guided visualisation and future pacing to set you up with
the good feelings of achieving your goal of becoming a non-smoker. After
this you set the date when you will become a non-smoker (in a few
days or a week perhaps, the timing is up to you) and this will be
the second session where we work together to achieve the actual stop
smoking hypnosis. Will hypnosis help me stop smoking? Imagine how fantastic it will feel to have freed yourself from the smoking trap. Hypnosis is completely safe and drug free. Given the failure rate and potential side effects of some of the drugs used to stop smoking using other methods, perhaps you should consider hypnosis. What
are the costs? When you diet you seem to put the food on a pedestal because you are having to stop yourself eating what you normally would. Once you reach your desired weight you tend to fall off the wagon and it all comes on again. The same with exercise. You seem to go through bouts of exercising and make some gains but once you reach your goal you fall off again. Sound familiar? With hypnosis we are looking at changing your thoughts, perceptions and habits around eating and exercise on a PERMANENT basis so that you can achieve the body that you desire. We can also harness the power of your subconscious mind to stimulate your body to make physical changes.

SPORTS PERFORMANCE If you have answered yes to any of these questions then hypnosis may be able to help you. Remember though you can’t build on a faulty base, if you have never kicked a rugby ball before hypnosis can’t turn you into Johnny’s successor. Neither will it make someone who has never played football before bend it like Beckham!
