The Back Fitness Class

There is a great deal of evidence that regular exercise controls back pain, even severe problems; but so often people are unsure of how to get started or whether they are doing the right kind of exercise. The back fitness group meets once a week for an hour's class. Each participant is individually assessed in the clinic before commencing a six week course. In this way the physiotherapist who leads the class has an understanding of each participant's back problems and what sort of exercises will benefit them. A home programme is devised for each person so that exercises can continue through the week and progress can be monitored over the six week course.

The class is friendly and informal, no lycra required! People who have joined the class in the past have been really positive about the benefits it provides. It restores your confidence in your back, shows you that its OK to get moving again and how much better you can feel once you get your muscles working for you.

Pilates Classes
are run by Richmond Physiotherapy’s pilates instructor Leigh-Anne Lawson. The classes are purposely kept small and will have a maximum of eight participants per class. The classes usually run for a course of seven weeks, times and days vary throughout the week; call Richmond Physiotherapy on Tel: 020 8332 1132 for current details.

At the core of pilates is ‘awareness of your own body’ and every exercise is built around eight key principles: relaxation, breathing, concentration, flowing movement, alignment, co-ordination, centering and stamina. Precise, controlled, flowing movements mean that the muscle and ligament damage, sometimes associated with other fitness regimes, is avoided. Pilates is also being used increasingly to complement the work of physiotherapists and osteopaths. It is beneficial in helping with past injuries and avoiding new ones in all aspects of daily life.

Pilates is great for; stress and tension relief, performance enhancement for athletes, people suffering from back problems, injury rehabilitation for dance, sport and general practice.
